The Silver Lining: Chasing Pantone's Cloud Dancer
Every year, the design world waits with bated breath for Pantone to decree the shade that will define our collective aesthetic.
The Pantone Colour of the Year is more than a swatch; it is a cultural pulse check, setting the mood for everything from high street fashion to the interiors of our favourite brunch spots. For me, the announcement is a creative starting gun, a yearly ritual in which I translate that singular hue into a fresh manicure.
For 2026, we are floating on Cloud Dancerβa soft, chalky white that feels remarkably grounded yet impossibly airy. It is a colour designed to evoke serenity and quiet, contemplative optimism, moving us away from the noise of previous years into a space of pure, unadulterated calm.
To honour Cloud Dancerβs ethereal spirit, I revisited the classic cloud motif with a sophisticated, textured twist. Rather than the predictable white-on-blue sky, I opted for a high-impact, pale champagne glitter base. Using a cat-eye polish and a magnet, my technician created a wide, velvet-light effect that mimics the glow of a sun-drenched horizon. For the clouds themselves, the trick is to avoid perfect circles; using a fine-detailing brush, I recommend dabbing small, irregular clusters of opaque white polish and lightly softening the edges with a clean brush for a fluffy, feathered look. This design is a masterclass in subtlety; from a distance, it appears as a shimmering, abstract neutral, but up close, the intricate interplay of velvet glitter and hand-painted art reveals a dreamy, celestial landscape. If you are feeling moody, swap the champagne for a silvery-grey base to mimic a stormy twilight, or try a lavender-hued cat eye for a touch of "golden hour" magic.
