Year of the Snake: Scaling New Heights with Crimson Nails

There is no better time than the Chinese New Year to rock a statement red manicure.

We’ve done a few of these by now, so every year I try to add a dash of creativity and create something that holds special meaning for that year. 2025 is the Year of the Snake, an animal symbolising wisdom, grace, and transformation. While I’m not the biggest fan of this spirit animal, I chose a design that honours its qualities in a bold mix of reds and gold, reminiscent of the opulence of this festive time.

In Chinese culture, red is the most auspicious colour, while gold symbolises wealth and success. For this set, I opted for a vermillion shade in a gradient that runs from bright to deep red, complemented by intentional negative space and a transition into a soft, shimmering gold. To mirror the elegance of the snake, we added subtle metallic patterns on the accent nailsβ€”think delicate swirls or a serpent-like design that captures the creature’s essence while remaining chic and sophisticated. It feels a touch louder than my usual aesthetic, but a little sparkle never hurts, especially during the festivities.

If you are attempting this bespoke manicure at home, the key to the gradient is to use a damp make-up sponge to dab the colours on, ensuring a seamless transition between bright red and deep, vampy tones. For those who want to mix up the colour palette, this design would look incredibly striking in a jade-green-and-gold combination, paying homage to another cornerstone of Chinese heritage. These nails are perfect for any New Year visit, helping to turn heads (and reel in more red packets), and pairing them with something equally vibrant, like a traditional Chinese outfit, would easily elevate your look.

Wishing you all a prosperous and joyful Year of the Snake! May you and your loved ones be blessed with good fortune and health as you welcome the new year with open arms.
