Mahjong Nails: A Winning Hand for Chinese New Year

A Becoming Carmen Lunar New Year manicure featuring a mahjong tile nail design with red and green accents.

While most are busy prepping red envelopes, I’m busy prepping my hands for the most high-stakes social event of the season.

If there is one time of year to indulge in the rhythmic click-clack of mahjong, it is the Chinese New Year. It’s the ultimate game of strategy and luck, a staple of family reunions that brings out everyone’s competitive streak. Even if, like me, you are a self-proclaimed "station chief" (η«™ι•·) who fumbles through every turn, there is no reason your fingertips shouldn't look like a winning hand. This set is my way of inviting prosperity and good fortune to the table before the first tile is even dealt.

To bring this mahjong nail art to life, I bypassed the stress of hand-painted calligraphy by sourcing intricate nail stickers featuring the three suitsβ€”Characters (萬子), Bamboo (紒子), and Dots (筒子)β€”as well as the iconic "Big Three" dragons (倧三元). The design uses a sheer, milky base to mimic the polished sheen of vintage tiles, creating a clean backdrop for the vibrant primary colours. We framed several nails with delicate red-and-emerald-green borders to give them a structured, tile-like silhouette, then added a dash of gold leaf for that essential festive bling. These nails may have been my flashiest set yet, and any serious mahjong player will tell you these misfits are useless in any practical game (they don’t even fit into the 13 Orphans). But I won’t deny they were good for laughs and super fun while they lasted.

For those attempting this look, ensure your base is completely dry before applying stickers to avoid bubbling, and use a thick gel top coat to encapsulate the decals for a smooth finish. If you want to switch up the palette, try a white jade theme with monochrome gold-and-silver accents for a more understated look, or lean into a bold matte-black base to make the colourful symbols pop with a contemporary edge. It’s the perfect conversation starter when you’re taking far too long to decide which tile to discard.

Here’s to lots of luck and joy for your Chinese New Year!
