Year of the Horse: Galloping into the Glow with Red Nails
Chinese New Year is the one time of year when "seeing red" is strictly positive.
As the Year of the Horse approaches, the streets of Hong Kong are awash in scarlet, and naturally, every other woman at the salon is requesting that quintessential shade of prosperity. While I adore tradition, I’m far too restless for a flat, one-dimensional crimson. This season, I wanted a look that felt like quiet luxury with a spirited, equestrian twist—something that says "I’m ready to gallop into 2026" without looking like I’ve dipped my hands in a vat of lucky envelopes.
To achieve this depth, we played with the multidimensional magic of cat-eye polishes. The base is a rich, vampy red paired with a shimmering champagne-silver that mimics the glint of expensive silk. We alternated between a glass bead effect for a concentrated orb of light and a wide light magnetic sweep for a soft, velvety glow. The zodiac nod is subtle yet sophisticated: hand-painted horseshoes and horse bits in delicate line work. Horseshoes are famously auspicious in both Eastern and Western cultures, so I’m essentially doubling down on my luck this year. To keep the set from feeling too busy, we grounded the look with crisp French tips and a light smattering of gold-leaf flecks, ensuring the metallic tones remained cohesive and delightfully decadent.
Here’s to a wonderfully auspicious Year of the Horse for everyone!
