Midnight Nebula Nails: Reaching for the Stars

The night sky can be endlessly beguiling—the way the cosmos stretches above us, mysterious and glittering, always just out of reach.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a little bit obsessed with the universe and all its stardust secrets. Maybe it’s the poetic romance of stargazing on a quiet night, or the thrill of catching a meteor shower just as you’re about to make a wish.

Who wouldn’t get caught up in the infinite beauty of galaxies swirling in the dark? I knew I wanted to channel that cosmic magic into my fingertips for glimpses of the velvet sky throughout my day.

Starting with a moody cornflower-blue base, a hue reminiscent of the shifting skies, we layered on dabs of magenta and blue cat-eye polish. The key is to layer and set the polish before moving on to another colour, so you end up with metallic swirls in different directions. Picking saturated shades also helps; they show up better and allow colours to blend more organically. Keep brushstrokes light and sporadic, almost as if you’re painting nebulas across a tiny canvas. To capture the illusion of twinkling stars, dot on flecks of white—some bold, some barely there—and a sweep of ultra-fine glitter topcoat for a finishing touch. It’s ethereal and abstract but very wearable, and I love how each nail tells a slightly different story, like looking up and finding a new constellation every time.
