I don’t party, and I don’t cosplay. Which is why I’ve long decided that if nails are the only Halloween costume I wear, they are going to be bloody fashionable.
My red nails are generally reserved for the Chinese New Year season, but this year I wanted to revisit the iconic drippy nail and give it a hauntingly beautiful Halloween twist. I was never quite into the trend when they were all over the Internet in slimy green or pastels for an ice cream melt look a few seasons ago, but blood red? These feel like the perfect intersection between glamour and a little bit of gothic mischief, with a bold, vampy edge that’s just right for autumn’s darker nights.
Drip nails are deceptively easy to recreate yourself. I started with a sheer nude polish for a clean base, then added chrome powder on top for a metallic finish that feels more luxurious and polished. Next, using a thin detail brush, paint irregular drips from the middle of each nail, letting some run further down for that perfectly imperfect, just-murdered-a-manicure vibe. My tip for a fluid, realistic drip is to hold your brush vertically and dot the polish at the centre of the nail where you want it to end, then drag it up in a wavy motion, connecting everything at the tips. And of course, seal with a glossy top coat to ensure the blood drips look convincingly wet and glistening.
I chose a deep, vampy red polish that was slightly translucent to achieve that jelly-like depth, which can be layered to mimic blood pooling. But if you’re feeling extra, a saturated, high-sparkle cat-eye would also be a lovely touch, and a red rhinestone at the end of bigger drips would really give it that shimmery touch. Now that would be dramatic and scream, “I’m vampire royalty”.
