The New Neutral: Tartan with a Twist
There’s something inherently comforting about a checkered pattern as the mercury drops, but we aren't exactly aiming for “shortbread tin chic” here.
While I adore a classic, I wanted a low-key tartan that felt more like whispered luxury than a loud Burberry shout. Lately, I’ve been utterly obsessed with the unexpected pairing of chocolate browns and electric blues—a combo that feels modern, grounded, and just moody enough. It’s the perfect aesthetic for those who want their manicure to look like it belongs in a high-end editorial, even if you’re just clutching a morning flat white at your desk.
To realise this vision, I started with a pale silver cat-eye base featuring a whisper-thin shimmer; it provides a luminous, velvet-like canvas without competing for attention. The magic lies in the stripes. Layer hand-painted lines of varying thickness and opacity to create depth, ensuring the tartan feels artisanal rather than stamped. Keep your lines slightly irregular to mimic woven fabric, and use a very fine detail brush for the metallic accents.
For a bit of character, I added a French tip and an accent nail with a different cat-eye polish, one that boasts a striking blue shimmer. I’ve always eyed this polish colour at my nail technician’s, and I’ve finally found a way to do it justice. The way blue pops against the warm brown is, frankly, addictive, and incorporating it into the tartan just ties everything together. Finish with a thick, glossy top coat to seal the layers and give those cat-eye particles room to catch the light. It’s a sophisticated, textured look that says you have your life together, and it’s positively one of my favourite sets over the years.
