Uniqlo x Marimekko Laine Dress: Cobalt and White for a Day by the Sea

Did you know that Marimekko is recognised as one of the earliest lifestyle brands, dating back to the 1950s? And that the brand name essentially means “Mari’s dress” in Finnish (Mari was short for Maria, the founder’s middle name)?

Honestly, the only reason I’ve yet to invest in their pieces is because I thought them tricky to get many wears out of. Everything is lovely and designed to last, just more of a statement to look at. So imagine my delight when the Uniqlo x Marimekko collaboration dropped! Bold Finnish designs x affordability? Sign me up please.

This dress is from the SS20 release and features the Laine (Wave) pattern by Annika Rimala in 1965. While the print is a classic, the colour combination of cobalt and white seems to be unseen before, a nod to the pattern’s name. It’s the right amount of whimsical and practical, complete with a removable tie belt and pockets.

Paired with espadrilles and ball drop earrings (remember the Rebecca de Ravenel trend from 2018?), this dress is perfect for a seaside vacation. The only thing missing right now, is the vacation itself.
